September 21 is the Day of Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Armenia. 29 years ago, on September 21, 1991, a referendum was held on the territory of the Republic of Armenia on the question "Do you agree that the Republic of Armenia should be an independent democratic country outside the USSR?" Out of 2 million 56 thousand 758 citizens participated in the referendum, 2 million 42 thousand 627 (94.39%) answered “yes” to the independence of Armenia, as a result of which the process of the formation of an independent government began.

The Armenian SSR was renamed the Republic of Armenia, briefly Armenia, having its own flag, coat of arms and anthem.
