2007: THE SECOND ARMENIAN CUP

06/05/2022

Banants FC (now Urartu FC) won the second cup in its history in 2007. In a tough struggle, the team led by the Czech Jan Poštulka defeated FC Ararat.

BANANTS FC AGAIN SUCCESSFULLY STAND IN THE WAY OF RIVALS

Just 3 years after the birth and winning the first cup, Banants FC left the Armenian championship, but in 2001 the club experienced a revival. The break did not interfere and the team continued to compete with the leaders both in the championship and in the Cup.

In 2007, Banants FCc won the Armenian Cup for the second time in its history, beating FC Ararat 3-1 in the final.

The first meeting of the teams in the cup tournament took place in 1992, in the 1/8 final match at the Hrazdan stadium. The newly formed Banants FC led by Varuzhan Sukiasyan celebrated a decisive victory by sending FC Ararat 2 unanswered goals. Ashot Barseghyan's brace brought victory to the team.

IT WAS NOT EASY TO BEAT THE EXPERIENCED FC ARARAT

In the semi-final, Banants FC and FC Ararat recorded the same results in the matches with the teams that reached the final in the previous season. Our team first beat Mika FC 1-0, and in the return match played 1-1 draw with them, and FC Ararat recorded the same results in the duel with FC Pyunik.

In the final match, which took place on May 9, 2007 at the Republican stadium, Banants FC led by the Czech Jan Poštulka won in overtime. We responded to the goal scored by FC Ararat player Marcos Pizzelli during first 90 minutes with Semyon Muradyan's goal. And in overtime, Banants FC managed to score 2 more goals. Aram Bareghamyan and Semyon Muradyan scored one each, the last one made a brace in that match.

Semyon Muradyan with 9 goals became the best striker of that year's Cup. The former footballer recalled the 2007 final:

The path to the final in 2007 was very interesting. At that time, there was a competition between me and Arsen Balabekyan for the title of the best scorer of the tournament, we both scored 7 goals each. I started the final match from the bench, we were losing from the very beginning, but in the last minutes I was able to score a goal and put the game into overtime, and my second goal was in the last minutes of overtime, before that Aram Bareghamyan put our team ahead, and I in turn made the score 3-1. These are wonderful memories that have survived to this day.”

Next, we will remember winning the third Armenian Cup in 2016 and the path to achieve it.
